Institute of Scottish Historical Research (ISHR)
Description
Established in 2007, the Institute of Scottish Historical Research (ISHR) stands as the preeminent institution for research into Scotland's history, based at the University of St Andrews. With nearly twenty historians of Scotland, the Historiographer Royal for Scotland, the ISHR encapsulates a wealth of expertise. In 2013, the institute introduced an initiative to invite eminent scholars for brief visits to conduct intensive research.
The ISHR serves as a hub for staff and a flourishing cohort of postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers examining all epochs of Scottish history from the early Middle Ages to the present. Hosting a variety of global events, the Institute engages a diverse array of delegates and speakers through research seminars, workshops, and conferences focusing on emerging discoveries and trajectories in historical inquiry.
The ISHR is associated with significant collaborative research initiatives such as the Mediaeval St Andrews Project, the History of the Universities Project, the Scotland and the Wider World Project, the Scotland, Scandinavia and Northern Europe Database, and the Scotland and the Flemish People Project. Formerly, the ISHR housed the Scottish Parliament Project. ISHR staff consistently secure research funding and grants to advance their investigations into Scotland's history.
