Institute for Environmental History (IEH)
Description
Established in 1992, the Institute for Environmental History (IEH) promotes research and education in the history of science, medicine, technology, and the environment. The institute, praised by BBC History Magazine for its contributions to environmental history in the UK, is part of a renowned School of History. It benefits from an academic department that has consistently excelled in national Research Assessment Exercises (RAEs) and Teaching Quality Assessments (TQAs).
Since its inception, the IEH has raised over £2.5 million in funding, primarily from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC), the Arts and Humanities Research Board/Council (AHRB/C), and Historic Scotland. It has previously collaborated with researchers at the University of Stirling, thereby solidifying its key role in environmental history in Europe. This was further cemented by hosting the inaugural conference of the European Society for Environmental History in 2001 and through past editorship of the journal Environment and History.
Furthermore, the IEH houses a team of archaeologists. They have gained prominence in Scottish coastal archaeology through their outreach and survey initiatives under the Scottish Coastal Archaeological and the Problem of Erosion (SCAPE) Trust, primarily via Shorewatch projects.
