Centre for Anatolian and East Mediterranean studies

Description

The Centre aims to promote research on the history and culture of the lands of Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean (i.e. the region from the southern Balkans to Egypt) from late antiquity to the First World War. In particular, the Centre aims to promote interdisciplinary research by bringing together historians, art historians and language and literature specialists.

A particular focus of the Centre, reflecting the concentration of unique expertise at St Andrews, is research on the historical relationship between the various ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities – Turks, Greeks, Armenians, and Arabs, Christians and Muslims, to name but the main ones – which has shaped the region. The Centre promotes the understanding of the influence of the common Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman past and its influence on historical developments, material culture and the literary heritage of the region.
