Logos Institute for Analytic and Exegetical Theology
Description
There are limited places globally capable of envisioning and executing a daring and innovative project. St Andrews, however, proves an exceptional environment for such a venture. The impetus for this novel institute is the remarkable shift that has occurred in philosophical studies over the past thirty years, with a substantial amount of scholarly research directed towards questions on God's existence. This revitalised interest has led to significant advancements and a profusion of published research, giving birth to 'analytic theology'.
The Logos Institute for Analytic and Exegetical Theology aims to integrate this novel generation of theological research with the University's existing expertise in biblical studies, philosophy, psychology, and international relations. The primary focus is to examine Christian theism's extensive explanatory power and its implications for comprehending human life's ultimate significance.
This exploration will take place through engagement with contemporary biblical scholarship developments. A major research focus will be the concept of forgiveness, a central Christian tenet, and its implications for addressing religious hostility, sectarianism, and even terrorism.
Theology, at its best, encompasses a variety of perspectives, integrating insights from biblical scholarship, philosophy, and natural and social sciences. It aims to address the religious communities committed to understanding God. However, such a diverse dialogue requires shared language, conceptual clarity, and discipline. In this context, analytic philosophy can significantly enhance theology by generating clarity.
