St Andrews Centre for Receptions of Antiquity (SACRA)
Description
The St Andrews Centre for the Receptions of Antiquity (SACRA), established in 2022, serves as a collaborative platform for ancient cultural reception studies spanning several university departments. Hosted by the School of Classics, the "Antiquity" in its title primarily reflects the Hellenic and Roman, Mediterranean roots of Classical Reception Studies, yet the Centre's focus transcends these boundaries. SACRA's distinctiveness lies in its exploration of lesser-known intersections and overlaps across traditional disciplinary borders.
Aiming to foster innovative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research, SACRA examines the reception of antiquity's ideas, artwork, and other cultural remnants in the contemporary world. The Centre unites scholars and students from six distinct departments, namely Classics, Art History, English, History, International Relations, and Modern Languages.
SACRA seeks to mirror and influence the increasingly diverse, integrated, and global scope of ancient reception studies. It supports research across a variety of themes such as: receptions of antiquity and the Global South, travel, early modern receptions of antiquity, visual/material culture, Scotland, class and political theory, and applied classics.
