Centre for the Public Understanding of Greek and Roman Drama
Description
Established in 2018, the Centre serves as a sustained platform for partnerships among scholars, contemporary play creators, theatre educators, and secondary schools. It welcomes all who believe they can benefit from its expertise in Greek and Roman drama and other ancient performance genres, such as Greek epic and lyric poetry. The Centre possesses comprehensive knowledge of post-classical adaptations and reinterpretations of ancient performance texts, from late antiquity to the present.
The Centre's goal is to disseminate research from the Classics and other departments to the broader academic community and the public. It actively seeks collaborations and knowledge exchange with researchers in related fields. Consequently, it hosts conferences and workshops that assemble scholars worldwide and an annual lecture by a visiting academic or theatre practitioner.
Occasionally, the Centre offers guidance and support to new student productions of Greek and Roman drama in St Andrews. Since the Centre's inception, St Andrews students have staged four plays: Aristophanes' Birds, Euripides' Iphigenia in Aulis, Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus, and Plautus' Menaechmi.
