Centre for Late Antique Studies
Description
The Centre for Late Antique Studies at the University of St Andrews focuses on the period of Late Antiquity, approximately 250 to 800 CE, a transformative era for most of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Crucial developments during this period encompassed the emergence of Christianity and Islam, the fall of the Persian Empire, the gradual decay of the Roman Empire, and the rise of Byzantium and Islam as significant political and cultural forces.
Scholars at the Centre, housed within the School of Classics, delve into various aspects of this period, exploring archaeology, history, literature, and religious life. The Centre fosters interdisciplinary studies, transcending chronological and linguistic specialities, and promotes collaboration between scholars from different academic schools within the University. It further aims to enhance the study of late antique history, stimulate the development of interdisciplinary approaches, publicise late antique studies initiatives, and foster partnerships with other universities.
The Centre is coordinated by a committee, with representatives from the Schools of History and Divinity, and an outreach officer.
