Centre for Political Ethnography (CPE)
Description
The centre aims to rescue ethnography from its current void in political science and build the UK's first centre for ethnographic research in politics and administration.
The centre provides an interdisciplinary platform for those who are interested in ethnographic research in politics and administration. The members work with like-minded colleagues from across the University. They, moreover, practise the 'art of translation' for multiple audiences.
Research Areas:
- ethnography;
- lived experience of politics;
- the everyday life of political elites;
- street level bureaucrats
The centre researches gaps in ethnography knowledge, including:
- ethnography is ‘endangered’ because it takes a long time, is ethically sensitive and has difficulty in securing funds;
- political ethnography is a minority sport in political science. Despite its distinct and distinctive contribution, its potential is realised rarely;
- in the era of impact, ethnographic fieldwork has the singular advantage that it involves working with the end users of research.
