International Centre for Policing and Security (ICPS)
Description
The International Centre for Policing and Security (ICPS) at the University of South Wales, the UK's longest-established and most esteemed policing and security centre, conducts research influencing UK and EU governments. It focuses on key security matters such as terrorism, political violence, cybercrime, warfare, and international organised crime.
Under the leadership of a leading expert on European policing and criminal justice cooperation, and deeply connected to both national and international research networks, the ICPS is highly respected by European institutions such as Europol.
The Centre's work is divided into two main themes: Terrorism and Security Research, and Policing Research, respectively. Their vision is to produce high-quality, ethical interdisciplinary research based in the practical world of policing and security, with a tangible impact on service delivery, policy, and education.
Members of the ICPS possess diverse skills and expertise, contributing to research projects that enhance the knowledge community and the courses they deliver. They collaborate with the University's Centre for Criminology Research and Centre for Social Policy, and their work is widely published in academic journals and books. Due to their expertise, they frequently comment on current policing and security issues in the media and social media and offer advice on a range of policing topics.
Members are engaged in editorial duties, serving on the editorial boards of esteemed international journals, including the book series European Security and Justice Critiques, the Journal of Contemporary European Studies, and the Police Journal: Theory, Practice and Principles.
The ICPS is also known for its industry-focused undergraduate and postgraduate policing and security courses, supporting the needs of police services, law enforcement agencies, and the private security industry. Students can develop skills such as data analysis, problem solving, people management, communication, and handling difficult situations. The Centre boasts excellent facilities, including a Crime Scene House, a Hydra Minerva Suite, and Crime Scene Laboratories.
