Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations
Description
Established in 2006, the Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations coordinates and supports academic research in the fields of media, culture, communication, theatre, and performance. Much of its work revolves around the creative industries of Wales and the broader economic, social, and political contexts in which these industries function. The Centre's research is 75% world-leading or internationally excellent, while 67% of its research impact is world-leading, ranking it first for impact among 84 UK universities, according to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results.
The Centre, located in the Faculty of Business and Creative Industries, comprises members from across the University, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of its work. It collaborates with the University’s Research and Innovation Groups and other research groupings and centres. Additionally, the Centre has established connections with media practitioners across Wales and the UK, and academic links with colleagues in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Catalonia, Belgium, New Zealand, India, Greece, Hungary, Romania and the USA.
The Centre's objectives include high-quality research with relevance for small nations, dissemination of research findings, enhancing dialogue between various stakeholders, initiating partnership arrangements, fostering applied research supporting entrepreneurial activities, developing national and international dialogues and collaborations, exchanging knowledge with institutions and communities, and establishing itself as a vibrant environment for postgraduate study.
In meeting these objectives, the Centre significantly assists the University of South Wales in fulfilling its broader research commitments, such as developing research in strategic areas, encouraging innovation and dissemination of research findings, and collaborating with businesses and Government to address societal and economic challenges.
