George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling (GEECS)
Description
The George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling (GEECS), situated at the University of South Wales, is the premier UK scholarly hub dedicated to storytelling research and applications. GEECS firmly asserts that storytelling fosters improved understanding amongst individuals and communities. Its areas of specialisation encompass digital storytelling, applied and community arts, folklore studies, performance, oral history, and storytelling in health and social care. The Centre, established in April 2005, serves as a rich resource repository for students, academics, and professionals incorporating storytelling in their work.
GEECS, named in honour of socialist and oral history pioneer George Ewart Evans, amplifies the University's pre-existing strengths in storytelling. This recognition is a tribute to Evans, a native of the former mining community of Abercynon, located near the University's Treforest campus.
The Centre views storytelling as a distinctive art form and a potent means for enhancing understanding and communication. Its applications span health care, social work, and oral history, extending to engagement with disadvantaged communities. GEECS is committed to utilising storytelling to promote inclusion, social justice, and cultural vitality at all societal levels. Its work bolsters the evolution of storytelling, elevates public and civic consciousness about storytelling, and challenges cultural norms and social presumptions. The GEECS team, consisting of experienced staff and an increasing number of research students, maintains an international presence by collaborating with partners worldwide.
