Transmission of Ideas
Description
The 'Transmission of Ideas' research hub investigates the methods and pathways through which concepts and arguments have been communicated and executed across various cultural strata. It offers a platform for academic discourse on numerous themes and methodologies concerning the communication and execution of ideas across diverse layers of culture, society, and government, spanning a broad chronological spectrum from classical civilisation to the late 20th century, and covering both Europe and Asia.
Five primary themes have been earmarked for collective study:
- Genre
- Authorship
- Print/manuscript culture and networks
- Education and translation
- Expertise and policy formulation
The hub commenced successfully in 2017-18 with 'Ancient and Modern Knowledges', a large-scale conference organised by Heather Ellis and Daniele Miano, featuring speakers from five nations. It is anticipated that a special edition of the Intellectual History Review will originate from the conference based on a selection of presented papers. The research seminar of the department also included a session dedicated to the hub in the spring, with valuable papers presented by Colin Reid and Eliza Hartrich on the propagation of democratic ideas in Ireland.
Besides reviewing draft articles and preparing for an upcoming research seminar paper by John Gallagher (Leeds) on urban multilingualism, the hub will launch a series of informal 'conversation groups' this year to focus on specific facets of the research themes
