Description
The research group explores from a critical perspective developments in digital data, information and knowledge, how they are constituted within wider socio-cultural and political economic contexts and the implications for social justice.
Notable projects include AI, machine learning, automation and robotics in information professions; data/AI cultures in science, education, and the arts; the value of openness and engagement for science in a post-pandemic world; and, understanding experiences and perceptions of data practices.
The group combines critical data and algorithmic studies, practice theory, innovation diffusion theory and social informatics to develop theoretically informed and innovative research. They employ a range of methodologies, including data mining, co-production, ethnography, and visual research methods. The group seeks to extend their collaborations with external organisations and practitioners, as well as interdisciplinary connections with other researchers. They are a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences Digital Society Network at Sheffield and the Association of Internet Researchers.
Their research interests include the socio-cultural and political-economic aspects of data and algorithms, responsible application of AI, changes in scholarship in contemporary society, the relationship between data, information and well-being, dynamics of data journeys and data friction, cultures of data science practice, and privacy issues in self-tracking citizen cultures.
