Centre for Information Literacy Research (CILR)
Description
Inaugurated in July 2007, the Centre for Information Literacy Research (CILR) endeavours to expand, elucidate, and evolve the domain of information literacy via rigorous research and related activities.
Information literacy, a growing global interest, is defined by Webber and Johnston as the apt information behaviour to acquire pertinent information that aligns with one's needs, coupled with a critical consciousness regarding the prudent and ethical use of information in society.
The CILR is committed to the following objectives:
- Advancing the research agenda in the field of information literacy
- Conducting research with a special focus on the priority areas highlighted under the centre's Research Priorities and Projects
- Seeking research funding opportunities
- Enhancing research capability, particularly through inquiry-based educational programmes
- Disseminating findings through various channels such as scholarship, learning, teaching, innovation, and encouraging its implementation within the practitioner community
- Fostering international collaborations with researchers in the field of information literacy and information behaviour to further these aims.
The centre builds upon pre-existing excellence in research and teaching within the Information School, encompassing funded research projects, publications, research events, invited talks and seminars at national and international conferences, and involvement in specialist networks and associations.
