Prokhorov Centre
Description
The Prokhorov Centre, unique in the UK, integrates the study of Central and Eastern Europe's intellectual and cultural histories. These regions have been historically intertwined, evidenced through instances such as the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the German Democratic Republic. Notably, several eminent German-language philosophers hailed from Eastern Europe, including Kant, Schopenhauer, and Freud. The Centre acknowledges the myriad instances of literary, artistic, and philosophical interdependence between these regions.
Established in 2014, the Prokhorov Centre investigates these connections from the perspective of humanities disciplines, focusing primarily on philosophy, history, art history, and comparative literature. The Centre addresses key topics such as the historical differentiation between Eastern and Western Europe, perceptions of each region from the other's perspective, various intellectual representations of Europe, and the intertwined intellectual histories of Germany and Russia.
The Centre's extensive purview, as suggested by its full name, 'Prokhorov Centre for the Study of Central and Eastern European Intellectual and Cultural History', includes a strategic focus on the fluctuating cultural, religious, and political borders between the East and the West. It examines ideological conflicts and barriers to cooperation, alongside efforts made towards fostering understanding and collaboration.
Supported by the Mikhail Prokhorov Foundation, the Centre promotes the development of new cultural institutions in Russia and globally. It hosts national and international events, including conferences, workshops, and the Sheffield Annual Arts and Humanities Prokhorov Lectures, delivered by globally recognised scholars.
