Centre for Luxembourg Studies
Description
The University of Sheffield hosts the unique international Centre for Luxembourg Studies, outside Luxembourg. Modern Luxembourg, a founding European Union member, lies on the Germanic-Romance linguistic borderland. Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch) is the national language since 1984, despite German and French influences. The latter two are also recognised as legal and administrative languages. Luxembourg's prosperity derives from its multilingualism and multiculturalism, stimulated by open contacts with neighbouring countries. The promotion of Luxembourgish establishes it as a focal point for humanities and social sciences research. In 1995, Professor Gerald Newton initiated the Centre for Luxembourg Studies, endorsed by Jacques Santer, a former Prime Minister and European Commissioner. It houses a significant portion of Radio Luxembourg's archive, a major research area for Professor Newton. His notable contribution to Luxembourg Studies includes the comprehensive volume "Luxembourg and Lëtzebuergesch: Language and Communication at the Crossroads of Europe" (Clarendon Press, 1996).
Currently, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg government funds an Endowed Chair in Luxembourg Studies. The Centre annually welcomes a Visiting Author from Luxembourg and collaborates with numerous research networks in Sheffield and globally. Staff is also involved in research projects with the Université du Luxembourg, including members of the Language, Culture, Media and Identities research unit. The Centre encourages postgraduate and postdoctoral research applications, particularly for interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences projects. Undergraduate students also participate in several Centre for Luxembourg Studies activities.
