Centre for the History of the Gothic
Description
Inaugurated in June 2014, the Centre for the History of the Gothic gathers scholars from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with an interest in the historical and national contexts of the Gothic genre, originating from the eighteenth century and its influence on nineteenth-century Gothic. The members' interests also extend to the Gothic genre's evolution to the present day, and its various forms, including poetry, theatre, and other media. The Centre is proud to have accommodated two previous co-Presidents of the International Gothic Association (IGA). Its members have internationally recognised reputations in Gothic studies and have spearheaded public engagement initiatives such as collaborations with schools and participation in the BFI-sponsored horror season at The Showroom.
The Centre aims to further expand its engagement in Sheffield and beyond. Its key objectives include supporting conferences and symposia on the Gothic, providing a hub for PhD training in Gothic Studies, and forging links with external entities like schools, museums, cinemas, and art centres. The Centre nurtures a vibrant postgraduate community, which organises a 'Gothic Reading Group' for staff and students of all levels to discuss Gothic texts in an informal setting.
Additionally, the Centre hosts 'Gothic Tours', a project that unites representatives from stately homes and abbeys in the north of England significant to the Gothic tradition. In collaboration with other universities, they help map a tourist trail of Gothic venues in the region as part of a wider 'Care for the Future' project.
