Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies
Description
The Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies, located at the University of Sheffield, focuses on collaborative research exploring cognition's fundamental aspects. Its interdisciplinary approach encompasses numerous fields, such as animal psychology, anthropology, biology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, economics, evolutionary psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and philosophy. The Centre has built collaborative relationships with universities in the UK, Europe, and America.
It hosts seminars, workshops, and conferences addressing topics like the human mind's nature and organisation, distinctive human traits and abilities, the interplay between culture and mind, the psychological and neurological basis of core cognitive abilities, the developmental and evolutionary history of these abilities, and the philosophical implications of cognitive science. Since its inception in 1992, the Centre has undertaken significant interdisciplinary projects that typically involve a sequence of workshops over one or multiple years, and international conferences. Each project culminates in the publication of collections of original interdisciplinary essays.
The Centre's foundation in 1992 in Sheffield came about due to Peter Carruthers, who acted as the Director until 2000. Its establishment was facilitated by an endowment from the Hang Seng Bank of Hong Kong, donated generously by Sir Q W Lee. The Centre currently resides in the state-of-the-art Humanities Research Institute at the University of Sheffield. Information on future public seminars and conferences can be found under Activities and Events.
