Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies (SCEMS)
Description
The Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies (SCEMS), situated in Sheffield, represents one of the most substantial, dynamic, and esteemed hubs for early modern studies globally. It boasts over 50 dedicated staff members and fellows.
The centre's scholarly competencies extend from late medieval to late eighteenth century, embracing subjects from musicology to social history. They analyse topics from local Yorkshire parishes to erstwhile American colonies, from the study of literary editing and manuscripts to the exploration of news-books, novels, material culture, and social practice. This interdisciplinary spectrum encapsulates history, literature, linguistics, and philosophy.
Moreover, SCEMS prides itself on unifying scholars who examine the three 'long' centuries constituting the early modern period: the lengthy sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. This melding of expertise prompts critical contemplation on notions of change, continuity, and periodisation, issues that all early modernists need to grapple with. Sheffield also enjoys a distinctive reputation for its digital humanities prowess. The Hartlib and John Foxe projects were at the forefront of humanities digitisation. Early modernists maintain a close relationship with Sheffield's Humanities Research Institute (HRI), a leading digitisation centre worldwide.
