Centre for Dutch and Flemish Studies
Description
The Centre for Dutch and Flemish Studies, situated within the Dutch Studies Section of the School of Languages and Cultures at Sheffield University, serves as a nucleus for all Dutch and Flemish-related cultural and academic activities in Sheffield and Northern UK.
This Centre fosters an inclusive approach to all facets of Dutch languages and cultures. The Dutch language, while synonymous with the Netherlands, extends to Belgium, particularly its Dutch-speaking region, Flanders. It is also prevalent in Northern France and beyond Europe, with official language status in Suriname and the former Dutch Antilles islands in the Caribbean.
The Centre's objectives are to:
- Consolidate interest and expertise in Dutch Studies within Sheffield University and Northern UK, whilst endorsing and publicising research and cultural activities at the University.
- Host cultural events open to all those interested in Dutch and Flemish language and culture.
- Arrange student-focused activities such as translation workshops and Dutch Studies Days.
- Enhance collaboration amongst academic and cultural entities within the UK and internationally.
- Engage, where feasible, with local and national partners.
- Advocate the study of Dutch to the public via their video channel and as a primary enquiry point.
