Material Histories, Sheffield
Description
Material Histories at Sheffield incorporates research and teaching across archaeological disciplines including material culture studies, material sciences, the study of technology, materials as they correlate to identities, the role of landscapes, relationships with built environments, funerary archaeology, absences in past narratives, digital imaging and analysis, the past in the present, decolonising and community archaeology. Research focuses on chronological studies of the human past, emphasising thematic approaches and creating a dialogue between texts and materials. We undertake fieldwork, generating original primary data sets and work in collaboration with international, national, and local institutions.
Material science and analytical techniques
In collaboration with engineers and digital humanities experts we have developed a vibrant materials hertiage science focus including expertise and equipment for digital imaging, elemental analysis and experimental archaeology.
Landscape archaeology
We host expertise and equipment for studying past human landscapes, sustainability and environment.
Archaeological survey and fieldwork
With strong connections to archaeological units, strategic heritage organisations and work placement providers, we undertaken fieldwork and offer field-based teaching across our MA and PhD programmes
