Cultural Heritage, Sheffield
Description
The University of Sheffield has established a strong reputation for teaching and research in cultural heritage, archaeological practice, and the historic environment. Alumni of the department form an international network of researchers and practitioners in the heritage industry. Sheffield’s current strengths lie in broad interdisciplinary expertise, established networks, and a strong existing offer in heritage teaching.
Research
Ongoing heritage projects span inclusive hertiage in Sheffield, sustainable heritage in UK National Parks and global heritages within the UK and across the globe. Our expertise has time-depth and methodological breath, and our connections with professional bodies supports ongoing research, which in turn informs teaching.
Established professional networks
Employability and skills training at the Department is supported by strong research, professional, and alumni connections. Work placements are facilitated by partners in the heritage industry (museums, consultancy, heritage bodies e.g. National Trust). An international alumni network has supported a vibrant research culture and supported practice-based teaching and guest lectures on modules in heritage.
The Department of Archaeology has a longstanding and established relationship with community heritage groups in the city of Sheffield, with Friends groups, and with learned societies. These connections support student fieldwork and student-led research which leads to Knowledge Exchange research projects, co-produced outputs, and collaborative research.
