Description
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR) develops research combining music, science and technology. Its research expertise ranges from musicology and composition to biomedical applications of music and the development of new technologies for musical creativity.
ICCMR is a pioneer of Brain-Computer Music Interfacing (BCMI) technology to enable severely motor-impaired persons to engage in music-making. Currently, it is championing research into AI and Quantum Computing for music composition and musicology.
The ICCMR is truly interdisciplinary actively publishing research outcomes in learned journals and conferences in the fields of music, digital arts, computing, engineering, psychology, neurosciences and medicine.
ICCMR's AI and unconventional computing research applies quantum technologies to the creation, performance and analysis of music, adapting generative methods such as Markov chains and random walks into quantum computational frameworks. The centre also investigates physical reservoir computing and quantum reinforcement learning to address scalability and efficiency bottlenecks in AI systems, alongside biological computing experiments using the bioelectric signalling of the slime mould Physarum polycephalum. Beyond music generation, its AI work extends to healthcare applications, including AI systems that adapt live digital radio broadcasts in real time to deliver personalised content for people living alone with dementia. This combination of quantum computing, generative AI methods and assistive AI technologies forms a distinct and active strand of the centre's research programme.
