International Growth Centre (IGC)

Description

The International Growth Centre (IGC) is a global research centre that comprises a network of leading researchers, country teams in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East, and a series of global policy initiatives. It is based at LSE in collaboration with the University of Oxford, and primarily funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Various challenges confront countries, necessitating fresh perspectives, new evidence, and a continuous flow of ideas.

The IGC’s approach revolves around three main pillars:

  • Inclusive and sustainable growth to combat poverty: The IGC strives to enhance the productivity of individuals and businesses as the foundation of economic development. It supports governments in transitioning to resilient and low-carbon growth paths, while safeguarding vulnerable populations against the adverse effects of climate change.
  • Partnership with policymakers: The IGC collaborates with policymakers to develop research that has a lasting impact on policy-making. Through its teams located in different countries and global policy initiatives, it fosters enduring relationships with policymakers to gain insights into their development challenges and the questions they seek to address.
  • Pioneering research: The IGC generates robust academic evidence to inform policy decisions. Its research endeavours to expedite the understanding of effective policies by providing substantial evidence on what works and by reframing policy inquiries to explore novel approaches. This strengthens existing policies and facilitates the formulation of innovative and transformative policies in response to emerging challenges.

The IGC concentrates on four crucial themes that are pivotal in elevating the productivity of individuals and businesses, ensuring inclusive and resilient growth, and guiding countries towards sustainable development. Sustainable economic growth is viewed as the primary catalyst for developing nations to adapt to and mitigate climate change.
