Voltaire Foundation for Enlightenment Studies
Description
The mission of the research department is to disseminate leading Enlightenment research and make the debates of Voltaire and his contemporaries accessible to a wide audience. The newly launched Voltaire Lab pioneers digital humanities methodologies in eighteenth-century studies through international collaborations.
With over forty years of experience, the department has established a global reputation for stimulating and sharing the most rigorous and current research on the eighteenth century. The writings of Voltaire and other scholars from that era played a vital role in shaping today's political and social systems. The Enlightenment thinkers advocated for rational thought, scientific inquiry, intellectual curiosity, and the separation of Church and State, all of which remain highly relevant today.
The department publishes the definitive edition of Voltaire's Complete Works (Œuvres complètes de Voltaire) and, in partnership with Liverpool University Press, Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment (formerly SVEC), the leading series dedicated to Enlightenment studies, with over 600 volumes published to date. Their publications also include the correspondences of key French thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, Bayle, and Helvétius.
In 2022, the Foundation completed the publication of Voltaire's writings, totalling 205 volumes. To commemorate this significant achievement and to honour and expand the legacy of founder Theodore Besterman, the Voltaire Foundation is currently constructing an unparalleled hub for Enlightenment scholarship on a global scale.
