Description

The Public Procurement Research Group (PPRG) is a global leader in research and teaching on public procurement law and policy. PPRG works with governments and international organisations as well as academics, practitioners, students and civil society around the world.

PPRG research encompasses issues of human rights and sustainability, development, corruption as well as defence and strategic procurement, with six units focused on different areas of public procurement law and policy:

  • Innovation, AI, Strategic and Defence Procurement
  • Humanitarian and Development Procurement
  • Corruption and Public Procurement
  • International Trade and Procurement
  • EU Public Procurement
  • UK Procurement

Its Innovation, AI, Strategic and Defence Procurement Research Unit focuses on the incorporation of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and other data driven solutions into public procurement regulation and practice, and supervises doctoral projects in areas such as the use of blockchain technology in public procurement and data driven analysis of procurement risk. The unit's head leads the team of procurement experts in a collaborative project funded by Innovate UK, undertaken in consortium with the University of Sheffield and a technology start-up, using artificial intelligence, big data, deep learning and natural language processing to create a virtually real-time picture of procurement market conditions in healthcare that connects buyers and suppliers across the healthcare and life sciences industries. The group hosted the Public Procurement: Global Revolution 2024 conference, whose programme covered themes including sustainability, innovation, AI and digitalisation, with workshop streams addressing artificial intelligence in procurement and AI, data and procurement.
