Resources, Environment and Development
Description
Climate change and biodiversity loss pose significant threats to vulnerable populations worldwide, making them crucial issues in global development. Understanding the impact of political and economic structures on social and environmental progress is vital for achieving sustainable development in a just manner.
Three pressing challenges require attention:
- How can ambitious strategies for climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation, such as expanding protected areas and reforestation initiatives, achieve their goals while also benefiting individuals and navigating complex trade-offs?
- How can private entities, governments, and local communities effectively manage land, agricultural commodities, and natural resources (e.g., water and minerals) in a socially just and environmentally responsible manner?
- How can the development of critical infrastructure, such as roads and dams, be carried out in ways that prioritize environmental and social sustainability? Approach and Research Focus:
The research primarily focuses on three areas:
- Exploring the political ecology and political economy of natural resource management, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.
- Assessing and estimating the social and environmental impacts of climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and natural resource management strategies. This includes investigating the fairness of remote sensing approaches in terms of data justice.
- Analysing various agricultural production systems, including alternative organizational structures, cooperatives, and value chains, in relation to their environmental and social sustainability.
