Mapping, Computing and Geographical Information Science (MCGIS)
Description
The Mapping, Computing and Geographical Information Science (MCGIS) research group aims to foster collaboration among colleagues in various geographical sub-disciplines who share methodologies in mapping, GIS, remote sensing, and computing.
The group comprises geographers specialising in human, physical, environmental, and computational fields, as well as academic professionals, research students, and colleagues from related disciplines. This interdisciplinary perspective on mapping and Geographical Information Science allows the group to leverage both technical and critical skills in developing new methods and applications.
The group's focus lies in emerging technologies, data analysis, data visualization, and software development across a wide range of applications in both human and physical geography.
MCGIS benefits from the University Map Library, which houses one of the most significant map collections in the UK, as well as Geography Laboratories equipped with mapping, surveying, and data collection tools (including UAVs). Additionally, the group has access to shared and dedicated high-performance computational facilities for machine learning and cluster computing.
MCGIS has hosted notable events such as the 25th GIS Research UK (GISRUK) conference in April 2017 and the FOSS4G UK conference in 2022.
