Cities, Politics and Economies (CPEG)
Description
Cities, Politics and Economies (CPEG) is a collaborative group of scholars in the field of urban, political, economic, social, and cultural geography. Building on the esteemed research conducted at Manchester Geography, the group serves as a platform for examining, analysing, and addressing contemporary urban, political, and economic challenges. It is an integral part of the Manchester Urban Institute (MUI).
CPEG explores a wide range of topics, including the construction and performance of diverse identities, territories, and economies. It also investigates the dynamics and mobility of policies and politics, the impacts of austerity, injustice, and inequality, and the exploration of alternative, sustainable, and socially equitable futures. The group's research contributes to the understanding of how cities, economies, and political practices are formed, mobilized, mediated, contested, and governed.
The group actively engages in organising and participating in international workshops, departmental seminars, and collaborative research endeavours. They provide feedback and support through peer reviews, writing retreats, research presentations, and discussions on research challenges. Additionally, the group aims to foster postgraduate research across the University and enhance the scholarly community by organising an annual postgraduate forum. These research synergies are essential components of the MUI, bringing together expertise in critical urbanism and urban research from various departments within the University.
Furthermore, the research conducted by CPEG complements the University's broader expertise in global production networks, consumption, political theory, and everyday life. Members of the group collaborate extensively with colleagues both nationally and internationally. Their work has received support from esteemed organisations such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), British Academy, Department for International Development (DFID), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), European Commission, European Research Council, Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF), Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, National Research Foundation of Korea, and Urban Studies Foundation.
The group focuses on various themes, including the everyday geographies of austerity, creativity, and sustainability; the interplay between geographies and political economies of public health; geographies of migration and mobility encompassing policy, people, and finance; geographies of social justice, equality, and rights; interactions between identity, space, and culture; political economy at different spatial scales, including labour relations, global production networks, and resource geographies; the evolving nature of urban life, urban politics, and urban policy; the development of innovative qualitative methodologies such as life histories, walking interviews, and family ethnographies; and the politics surrounding sovereignty, devolution, and urban and regional governance.
