Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture (CSSC)
Description
The Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture (CSSC) is the UK's premier research institution dedicated to studying the intricate connections between sexuality, gender, culture, and history.
With esteemed faculty members hailing from various academic disciplines within the University, CSSC collaborates with local and international organisations, arts centres, and networks. This collaborative environment fosters cutting-edge scholarship while also promoting arts activism aimed at challenging current societal perceptions of sexuality and gender.
Research Areas: CSSC researchers are at the forefront of sexuality studies, exploring new paradigms and theoretical approaches in the following areas:
- Queer and trans historiography and temporalities
- Subjectivity formations, including race, ethnicity, and class
- Post-gay cultures
- Norms and normativities
- LGBTQ health and sexual politics
- Queer and feminist visual cultures
- AIDS writing and activism
- Queer cultural theory
CSSC offers an interdisciplinary master's program in Gender, Sexuality, and Culture. Additionally, academic and postgraduate members of the Centre regularly organise research seminars and events focused on feminist and queer debates.
