The Centre for the Cultural History of War is a dedicated research and teaching centre that explores the influence of war on culture, society, and the portrayal of its consequences in the modern world. The centre focuses on various interconnected themes, including:
- Cultural responses to war and conflict
- Displaced people and refugees
- Humanitarian relief and medical interventions
- Gender dynamics in times of conflict
- Notions of heroism and heroes
- Children and youth affected by war

At its core, the centre comprises a team of established and newly appointed academic staff responsible for coordinating and disseminating research on a national and international scale. They provide support to a new generation of research students and postdoctoral fellows in this field, attracting funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowships and forming the basis of the departmental research group.
The Centre oversees the MA program in War and Culture, actively recruits PhD candidates, and offers compelling undergraduate courses in the field. Additionally, it maintains close collaborations with local cultural partners such as the Imperial War Museum North (IWMN), the Manchester Art Gallery, and the Whitworth Art Gallery.
The centre serves as a host for collaborative research grant proposals and engages in various impactful activities, including public exhibitions, radio and TV programs, projects with charities, and educational initiatives for young learners.
