Centre for New Writing, Manchester
Description
Since 2007, the Centre for New Writing has been a dedicated supporter of contemporary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, as well as creative writing and playwriting. The centre offers comprehensive instruction in novel writing, short stories, poems, plays, and screenplays. They provide guidance on reading as a writer, conduct seminars on form, theory, and contemporary publishing.
Undergraduate students can develop a fresh and lucid writing style along with a solid grasp of structure. MA students have the opportunity to refine their skills for potential publication or the creation of professional stage, television, and film works. Moreover, PhD students can combine a substantial piece of creative work with critical research, enhancing their prospects for teaching or academic positions.
The center welcomes talented and dedicated students from various styles and genres. Their fundamental question is: Does the work succeed on its own terms? And how can it be improved?
The centre takes pride in offering students detailed and personalised feedback, both in writing and through face-to-face interactions. Workshops are designed to be practical and hands-on, drawing upon the tutor's experience as a working novelist, poet, or industry professional. Seminars aim to develop students' skills as readers and critics while fostering an understanding of the contemporary literary landscape.
The centre also publishes The Manchester Review online, showcasing exceptional international writing from established as well as emerging poets and prose writers. Centre’s students actively participate in the vibrant Manchester literary scene, with the University a funder of the UNESCO City of Literature, and a supporter of its networks for events, festivals, publishers, libraries and writer development
