Description

The Institute for Cultural Practices provides a platform for innovative research, postgraduate teaching, and professional development which engages with cultural and heritage producers and organisations in Greater Manchester and beyond.

Whether you are a prospective student, a professional practitioner, a policy-maker, or a researcher, members hope that the courses and activities offered by the Institute will be of value and interest to you.

The Institutes hosts the Centre for Arts Management and Cultural Policy, which was established in 2009, as part of the Institute for Cultural Practices. Working with its sister Centre for Museology, it aims to:

• provide an axis for engagement, collaboration, and partnership between arts and cultural management professionals, sector organisations, and higher education;
• provide a base for research, teaching, knowledge transfer, and professional development relevant to arts and cultural professionals with a particular interest in the areas of management, leadership, policy-making, and strategic development.

The Institute also hosts the Centre for Museology, launched in 2002. The centre aims to:

• develop and promote teaching and learning in museum theory and practice, and create training opportunities for professionals in the arts and cultural sectors;
• undertake and promote research into the history, theory, and practice of museums, and foster interdisciplinary and collaborative research;
• promote academic and professional collaboration between the University and the museum profession in the North West, throughout the UK, and overseas.

The staff of Art History and Cultural Practices at The University of Manchester, abhor racism and are committed to redressing the issues of discrimination and racialised disadvantage within their disciplines and their own teaching and research practice, and to decolonising their curriculum. They are determined to produce a departmental culture that welcomes and supports BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled students and staff, and where everyone is equally recognised and can flourish.
