Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), Manchester
Description
The Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) unites diverse researchers from the Faculty of Humanities. Its interdisciplinary approach is crucial in comprehending the complexities of the region. Considering Latin America and the Caribbean's global interconnectedness alongside its distinctive regional expertise, the Centre emphasizes the significance of area studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences for comparative and theoretical work.
The Centre's current research centers broadly on global inequalities, a key research focus of the University. It is organized around the following four areas:
- Mobilities: Examining the correlation between movement and identity, this research strand investigates migration, immigration, and exile. It explores localized instances of movement as well as their positioning within regional, transnational, and global frameworks.
- Culture and power: This area delves into how culture can challenge imposed economic hierarchies, political identities, and social relations in the region. It encompasses cultural production, the politics of representation, cultural politics, ethics, and histories.
- Urban inequalities: Latin America, being the world's most urbanized region, faces significant wealth disparities within its cities. However, this research reveals that urban conglomerations also harbor potential for alternative urban futures through informal building practices, political and economic self-determination, and cultural resistance. This work aligns with research conducted by The Manchester Urban Institute.
- Racial and ethnic identities: Focusing on the racial, ethnic, and cultural hybridity, mestizaje, and transculturation central to Latin America and the Caribbean, this strand addresses historical and contemporary social inequalities related to race and ethnicity.
