Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Arts and Languages (CIDRAL)

Description

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Arts and Languages (CIDRAL) serves as a platform for cross-disciplinary activities and exchanges within the School of Arts, Languages, and Cultures (SALC) and beyond. Its primary goal is to unite and foster dialogue among the diverse interests of research staff and students associated with the School. CIDRAL embraces intellectual inquiry, emphasising two fundamental principles: interdisciplinarity and collaboration. In 2022, CIDRAL underwent restructuring to effectively function as a hub for various research groups within the School, including its Research Centres. Through strategic workshops and targeted funding, CIDRAL facilitates communication between the Centres and diverse audiences within the School and beyond. Additionally, CIDRAL engages with the School's Research Associates, postdoctoral researchers, and postgraduate community, providing writing workshops and training activities on interdisciplinarity and funding opportunities.

To encourage interdisciplinary dialogues, CIDRAL annually focuses on a specific theme. Currently, for the 2022-2023 period, CIDRAL is organising events centred around Forests, exploring the diverse expressions of environmental humanities and addressing the Faculty of Humanities' research challenge of environmental sustainability.

In 2022, CIDRAL introduced the Visiting Fellow Scheme to promote conversations related to its research themes.

CIDRAL offers various annual funding opportunities, including the CIDRAL Workshop and Events Grant, which supports events aligned with the annual theme. Additionally, CIDRAL hosts a postgraduate poster competition and a biennial research publication event, celebrating book publications and similar achievements by research staff affiliated with the School.
