Description
The Manchester Centre for Archaeology and Egyptology (MCAE) functions as a central hub for all archaeology-related matters at The University of Manchester.
Situated in a city with roots tracing back to the Roman fort of Mamucium, the University has a longstanding tradition in Archaeology. MCAE is an interdisciplinary subject area, with archaeologists working across all three faculties of the University (Humanities, Biology, Medicine and Health, Science and Engineering), as well as collaborating with colleagues at The Manchester Museum in fields such as geography, biological sciences, biochemistry, zoology, and ancient history.
MCAE's objectives are as follows:
- Support cross-disciplinary relationships

- Promote public engagement initiatives
- Create appealing opportunities for PhD and post-doctoral researchers Manchester offers a range of facilities and resources for the study and research of Archaeology and Egyptology, including:
- Well-equipped Archaeology laboratories
- Comprehensive fieldwork equipment, including geophysics and 3D capture tools
- A diverse teaching collection spanning from Near Eastern Neolithic pottery to 19th-century British clay pipes
- An extensive obsidian reference collection, alongside the Manchester Museum's extensive collection (accessible through the link below)
- Biomedical, biomolecular, and geological facilities and equipment available in other schools and faculties at The University of Manchester.
