Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS)
Description
The Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS) is the sole postgraduate academic institution in the United Kingdom dedicated to the examination of the Commonwealth and its member states.
It proudly houses the longest-running interdisciplinary and practice-oriented human rights programme in the UK. In addition to its esteemed historical research, the Institute focuses on the pressing challenges faced by Commonwealth states and societies, offering well-founded policy recommendations to address contemporary issues.
In 2021, the University of London initiated an Inquiry into the Future of Commonwealth Studies. This Inquiry served as the catalyst for reimagining the Institute's role, aiming to establish it as a hub for thought leadership and research, resulting in policy-oriented solutions for modern Commonwealth concerns.
Building on its established expertise in analysing historical trends and legacies, the Institute now places heightened emphasis on addressing present and future challenges encountered by Commonwealth states and societies.
The Institute's objectives moving forward are as follows:
- To continue conducting research and engaging the public on issues pertaining to media freedom and human rights, with a renewed focus on climate change and climate justice. Notably, in the academic year 2022/23, the Institute will host a significant series of keynote lectures centred on various human rights topics. Moreover, seminars, lectures, and workshops will be organized during Commonwealth Week in March 2023.
- To produce a collection of Working Papers that offer evidence-based solutions and policy recommendations to tackle contemporary global problems.
- To organize workshops and training sessions tailored for early and mid-career Commonwealth diplomats and professionals. These initiatives aim to enhance their skills and knowledge in key areas.
In pursuit of its redefined vision, the Institute is poised to make substantial contributions to the understanding and resolution of current challenges faced by the Commonwealth and its member states.
