History and Policy (H&P)
Description
History and Policy is an organization that aims to enhance public policy by fostering a deeper understanding of history. It operates as a national network comprising over 500 academic historians and serves as an independent platform for historical perspectives on contemporary policy issues.
Recently, History and Policy has returned to its original home within the Institute of Historical Research (IHR). The IHR provides a natural and fitting environment for History and Policy, aligning with the institute's mission to advance historical research and demonstrate its societal value. This collaboration also reflects the strategic vision of the School of Advanced Study (SAS), which seeks to connect humanities scholars both within the UK and globally. The goal is to explore how their research can contribute to improving quality of life and decision-making processes.
The fundamental principle that guides History and Policy is the conviction that history has the potential to enhance public policy. By drawing on historical knowledge, policymakers can avoid duplicating past errors and learn from previous experiences. This approach helps ensure that policy decisions are informed and effective, ultimately contributing to better outcomes for society as a whole.
