Government, Parties and Elections (GPE)
Description
The GPE research cluster, hosted by the Department of Politics at the University of Liverpool, is a group of staff members and PhD students who have a broad interest in political parties, elections, political behaviour, public opinion, public policy, and political institutions in the UK, as well as from a cross-disciplinary perspective. Members of the cluster frequently appear on television and radio, and offer their insights on social media.
The cluster conducts research on a wide range of topics in the UK and comparatively, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches from political science, political history, political philosophy, political communication, and psychology. The research areas studied include:
- British politics and politics of Northern Ireland, including devolution and Brexit
- Comparative political behaviour, such as public opinion, political representation, party positions, elections and voting behaviour, the electoral process and the voting age debate, political engagement in gender, youth and marginalized communities, health and political attitudes and behaviour, and populism
- Political parties, including party organization, leadership, leader and candidate selection, and political rhetoric and oratory
- Public policy, including policy agendas, policy learning, and diffusion
- Media, including agendas, coverage, framing, and effects.
The cluster aims to attract funding and produce high-quality research that results in high-impact publications and outputs. Additionally, it seeks to host stimulating conferences and events that attract the attention of academics, students, members of the wider community, media, and policymakers. The cluster also runs an Online Seminar Series, which invites early-career and experienced speakers who are experts in their research topics.
