Place, Space and Belonging
Description
The Place, Space and Belonging research group, comprising Modern Languages and Cultures staff and postgraduate students, investigates the construction of identities and the interconnections among linguistic, cultural, visual, and spatiotemporal processes of identification.
The group operates within interdisciplinary research areas and takes a language-sensitive approach, aiming to provide a platform for research in Modern Languages and Cultures, as well as related fields, that contributes to the development of the Humanities in the 21st century across traditional scholarly fields.
The research themes and projects of the group question the meaning of boundaries, particularly the national and institutional boundaries that promote exclusionary practices. The group emphasizes the trans-dimensional aspects of participation and belonging.
Language, including literature, is central to constructions of identity, as it is the primary means of articulating meaning. However, the group recognizes that other semiotic systems, such as spatial and visual semiosis, also play an essential role in understanding the complexity of the human experience.
