Centre for Architecture and the Visual Arts (CAVA)
Description
The Centre for Architecture and the Visual Arts (CAVA) is a research center situated within the School of Architecture at the University of Liverpool. It is a multi-disciplinary and practice-based center with a focus on the critical intersection of space, media, and culture in the context of digital, networked spaces and spatial practices, with particular emphasis on their social and economic impact.
The research at CAVA involves the application of design and system thinking/methods to study trans-disciplinary impact and to consider the theoretical and practical intersection between analogue and digital culture. The center is engaged in various research areas, which include:
- Film and Architecture: CAVA undertakes research into the representation of space/architecture in film, as well as the theoretical and practical implications of filmic/cinematic qualities of architecture and cities.
- VR and AR Experience Space: The center has expertise in how space, architecture, and cities are increasingly characterized by and extended into digital experiences and virtual and augmented forms of representation.
- City Placemaking: CAVA is interested in how urban form and the architectural fabric of cities inform city placemaking, considering perspectives from morphological, planning, sociological, cultural, artistic, and heritage perspectives.
- Outdoor Advertising: The center works on theories and creative concepts that regard outdoor advertising as integrated, responsive, and individualized means capable of transforming urban form and lived experiences.
- Mapping and Cartography: With expertise that encompasses a broad and multi-faceted approach to maps and map-making, CAVA explores the mixed- and multi-media possibilities of mapping in the digital age.
- Spatial Anthropology: CAVA explores the cultural production and consumption of space and place, as well as the interdisciplinary cross-currents of practice and performance that underpin spatial humanities approaches to cities.
