Architectural and Urban History Group
Description
The Liverpool School of Architecture has a strong tradition in historical research, tracing back to distinguished figures. One of the key features of the Architectural and Urban History Group’s work today is its emphasis on empirical research, drawing on extensive archives and other primary sources that have not yet been published. The group is primarily focused on the history of architecture, cities, and theory during the twentieth century, although PhD applications in other areas are also encouraged and welcomed.
The Liverpool School of Architecture has been recognized for the quality of its research output, achieving the top spot in the REF 2014 assessment of all the UK’s universities’ research. The school had a GPA of 3.19, with 40% of its research output rated 4* (world-leading) and another 40% rated 3* (internationally excellent), giving it a leading position in the rankings. The Architectural and Urban History Group is committed to international research and has a global reach. Current and recent research projects cover regions from Britain and America to Italy, Spain, West Africa, India, China (including Hong Kong), and Japan, from the nineteenth century onwards. The group has won prestigious research awards from a range of organizations, including the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the British Academy, and the Leverhulme Trust.
Apart from research and publishing, members of the Architectural and Urban History Group are active in various learned societies, amenity organizations, and professional bodies, promoting architectural and urban history to a wider public and advising local and national governments on planning and listed building applications. They hold prime positions in the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB) and have served as Trustees of the Twentieth Century Society and committee or panel members of other organizations.
The Liverpool School of Architecture believes that research informs teaching, and the wide range of research pursued in the school provides a rich body of knowledge from which both undergraduate and postgraduate students – especially PhD students – can benefit. Recent PhD topics include the Architectural Association in the 1950s and 1960s, Richard Siefert and Architecture for Profit, and the Evolution of House Form in the Turkish Context. The school welcomes applications from students who wish to pursue similar or divergent research topics.
