Receptions Research Group

Description

The investigations into the later cultural, social, and political significance of Classical antiquity are a result of research specialisms in Greek and Roman literature and society by the group. Their research interests also link to those of the Literary Cultures of the Ancient World.

The group explores the intersection of ancient Latin and early modern English poetry, dynamics of Plutarch's biographies within 19th-century Russian intellectual and political culture, networks of Virgilian imagery in 19th-century European exploration narratives, and audiovisual presentation of ancient history on television, among other things.

They share a focus on the transition and transformation of ancient texts, images, artifacts, narratives, and ideas into new forms and contexts, with heroism being a particular theme. Archaeology plays a prominent role in projects related to Liverpool's museum history and historical landscapes, placing their research within the University's Heritage theme.
