Institute for Digital Culture

Description

The Institute collaborates with the culture sector to lead and adapt to the digital world by driving purposeful and useful research around digital culture. It works empathetically with cultural organizations, professional bodies, and communities of practice, assembling the progressive thinking and diverse talents within digital culture research to respond to real needs. The Institute values inclusivity, enabling early career digital culture researchers and centring core values of collegiality and respect.

The Institute's research on digital within the culture sector considers it as something used (a technology, a tool), managed (a process, a policy), created (a piece of content, a collection), and understood (a context, a culture). At its core, the Institute is committed to a values-driven approach to supporting and working with the cultural sector, supporting the Digital Culture Charter's core principles.

The Institute's approach is open, transparent, and accessible, modeled through its Digital Culture Studio, a place to showcase and share, articulate and advocate, demonstrate and design together. The Institute values creativity and experimental work, working across disciplines to resource its Creative in Residence program, which acts as a catalyst for purposeful transdisciplinary research in digital culture.

The Institute values iterative, needs-driven, experimental working, balancing the interests of academic researchers with the needs of individual cultural sector people and organizations. The annual Digital Culture Residentials provide opportunities for practitioners to engage with the Institute's collaborative and interdisciplinary work, bridging the gap between formal and informal research and disseminating insights across everyone's work.

The Institute's research areas include Creative and Cultural Technologies, Digital Skills and Leadership, Inclusive Digital Design, and Cultural Informatics.
