Centre for Urban History
Description
The Centre for Urban History at the University of Leicester was founded in 1985 and has since become an internationally renowned institution for the study of urban history. The Centre focuses on studying the history of towns and cities in Europe and Asia, with a particular interest in Britain, China, India, and Ireland. The Centre offers MA and PhD degrees, as well as visiting fellowships for historians and scholars from other institutions. The Centre has an excellent reputation for its research and teaching, which includes policy and practice in areas such as conservation and heritage, as well as scholarly publications.
The Centre is located in a Victorian house in a historic conservation area, close to the main University campus. It provides students and international visitors with access to office space, a specialist library, local history collections, and facilities for seminars, workshops, and conferences. The Centre fosters a real community spirit and encourages graduates to provide mutual support and engage in various professional activities.
The Centre also houses the East Midlands Oral History Archive, which collects, preserves, and disseminates oral history recordings. Additionally, the Centre holds archive collections of personal papers of pioneering figures in local history. The Centre's own growing specialist library complements the University Library's excellent collection of urban, archaeological, and local history books and journals.
The Centre for Urban History is a hub for British and international activities in terms of online resources, publications, and conferences for urban historians. It edits the academic journal Urban History, produces an online conference diary, coordinates meetings of the British Urban History Group, and promotes the Pre-Modern Towns Group and European Urban History Association conferences. For further information about visiting or studying at the Centre. The Centre is part of the School of History, Politics and International Relations.
