Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA)
ActiveDescription
Established in 2014, the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA) has developed state of the art physical and IT infrastructures to raise the bar in standards of data quality, access, protection and exploitation.
Over 90 research centres, programmes and projects are now based at the Institute and its infrastructure also supports in excess of £75 million research across the university.
Growing through support from a network of local and national collaborators, LIDA is becoming a major powerhouse for research, civic engagement and business growth in the North of England and beyond.
LIDA aims to advance knowledge and improve well-being and prosperity through internationally outstanding research and education in interdisciplinary data science and artificial intelligence.
LIDA’s research communities are currently focused on three main challenge areas that require interdisciplinary working: Societies, Health and Environment.
Supporting these communities are four cross cutting programmes of work that focus on exploiting and developing the Institute's capabilities and capacity within four key methodological data analytics areas ; Statistical Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Technologies, underpinned by technical Infrastructure and expertise.
LIDA's Artificial Intelligence Programme brings together researchers based in computing, electrical engineering and mathematics who share a broad interest in machine learning and AI and their applications. The programme focuses on developing efficient AI-based methods for domains characterised by complexity and uncertainty, involving images, networks, texts, time series and big data, and seeks to combine machine learning and AI algorithmic approaches with statistical modelling as a step towards explainable AI. These methods are applied to a variety of real-world problems across health, societies and environment, with the aim of making credible real-time forecasts and building intelligent monitoring and control systems that assist evidence-based decision making. The institute is also home to a UKRI doctoral training centre in AI for medical diagnosis and care, which trains researchers to contribute to the transformation of healthcare using AI and focuses on AI in cancer care.
