Glasgow University Media Group
Description
The Glasgow University Media Group (GUMG) was founded in 1976 with the release of their first publication, Bad News, which received backing from politicians, trade unionists, and scholars for its critical assessment of the established media. Over the following thirty years, GUMG researchers continued to produce contentious publications such as More Bad News and Really Bad News.
Currently, media plays a critical role in the fast-changing political, social, and technological environment. As a result, sociological media research is vital for understanding its influence on society and audiences. However, GUMG believes that the social sciences have not made a significant impact on society as research has been either too remote from policy and practice or too entrenched in the field to encourage innovation.
To address this issue, GUMG aims to create new research and knowledge exchange that will have a meaningful impact on society. Their present research is global and covers subjects such as UK political parties, climate change, social media, and news production in the Global South.
Their unique approach to sociological research analyzes media content and its influence on public opinion and belief. They use research methods such as content analysis and audience focus groups, which have been applied in various international contexts in areas such as health behaviors, mental health, discrimination, climate change, and other social policy domains.
Their work has significantly impacted the theory and practice of mass communications and influenced media and communication studies courses in the UK and worldwide. GUMG aims to provide knowledge that will have a global impact on policy, service, and practice development and collaborate with third-sector organizations, policy, and lobby groups.
Their staff and students are actively involved in a broad range of research and practical projects and digital platforms. They strive to work transparently, interdisciplinarily, and collaboratively and welcome feedback and suggestions from their partners and stakeholders.
