Language and Society Cluster (SocioLung)

Description

The Language and Society cluster (SocioLang) focuses on language and social life. It brings together expertise on:

  • Critical sociolinguistics
  • Discourse studies
  • Linguistic anthropology
  • Linguistic ethnography
  • Language learning
  • Geographies of Language

In the cluster members explore the dynamics of intra- and inter-linguistic linguistic variation in the repertoires of individual speakers and within and between multilingual and linguistically diverse societies. They explore language and ethnicity, bilingualism, language ideologies, linguistic landscapes, language policy and planning, language and the political economy, social movements and language activism, language and place, multilingual literacies, language and tourism and issues pertaining to regional minority languages, migrant languages and 'new speakers' of these languages.

SocioLang transcends disciplinary boundaries and builds a dialogue amongst researchers, policy makers, practitioners and activists to explore the dynamics of language, society and change.
