Eighteenth-Century Arts Education Research Network (EAERN)
Description
The Eighteenth-Century Arts Education Research Network (EAERN) is a pioneering initiative that brings together practitioners and scholars to explore innovative approaches in utilising educational materials related to the arts during the eighteenth century. During the eighteenth century, authors who were concerned with arts education endeavoured to create a legacy for their work through treatises and manuals.
These works played a significant role in establishing the educational environments in which modern arts education institutions, such as music conservatories, art schools, dance academies, and higher education centres in literature and history, currently exist. However, while arts education was once part of a broader disciplinary context during that period, this is no longer necessarily the case. Many practitioners and scholars now work in isolation as they seek to understand how to practically apply, recreate, and restore these historical manuals. By creating a platform where scholars and practitioners from various arts disciplines can come together to examine and discuss the use of eighteenth-century materials, EAERN aims to develop new methodologies that embrace the interdisciplinary nature of the arts and establish new areas of collaboration and research.
EAERN has received funding from the Royal Society Edinburgh (RSE) to launch its activities, which include colloquia, seminar series, a newsletter, and publications.
