Substantial Motion Research Network
Description
The Substantial Motion Research Network is an international research network catering to scholars and practitioners interested in the cross-cultural exploration of digital media and philosophy. The network revolves around shared interests in media archaeology, the migration of Islamic aesthetics, international contemporary art, media theory, and the connections between Islamic and Western philosophy. It serves as a platform for online publications, symposia, exhibitions, and international collaboration.
Mulla Sadrā Shirāzī (1571-1641)’s theory of Substantial Motion (al-harakat al-jawhariyya) served as the inspiration for the design of this network. Despite the physical distances, scholars and artists with shared interests are connected within the Substantial Motion Research Network. Each member contributes to the development of others through sharing research, ideas, and practices, and benefits from the input of others in return.
The online platform of the network hosts research in both public and members-only sections. It provides a private forum for network members to share their work, workshop projects, and collaborate. Monthly video-conference meetings are archived, where members present works in progress, both scholarly and artistic, to receive feedback. On the public face of the platform, members' research profiles, publications, and artworks are showcased, and information about upcoming events is available.
